Babel Universe AMA

Jake: Hey everyone, today we are joined by Handuo, Co-Founder of The Babel Universe – a new NFT collection dropping on the Mogul platform soon! Handuo – would you please start by giving the audience a bit of background info on Babel and how you went about creating the IP?

Handuo: Great! Nice meeting you everyone.

The Babel Universe is a Sci-Fi IP I’ve been developing for the past 3 years.

It started as an academic thesis called “The Concept of Universal Language” where I researched the history of a trend of thought – the willingness to break through the linguistic communication barrier between individuals. In other words, connect our minds.

You may be thinking about telepathy or some other “pseudo-science” now but it actually has become quite technological these days, ever since Elon Musk’s Neuralink and the whole brain-computer interfaces movement.

Then three writers heard the story at the Cologne film festival in 2020. We then worked together to develop this into an Animated Series Bible and a Pilot Script.

Since the story is about a collective intelligence (formed by 10,000 connected minds) against an AI totalitarian world, we believe that such a story should also be made by a collective intelligence.

So I partnered up with crypto veteran Yanko at the beginning of this year and developed Babel into a Collaborative Sci-Fi Project.

Handuo: Yeah, a lot of stuff.

Jake: Congrats on your success with the development of the story so far, It’s evident how much thought has gone into it.

What spurred you to want to use NFTs/web3 from the start when going about developing the story and vision?

Handuo: So, on one hand, like I mentioned, having a collective intelligence to create a story universe centering a collective intelligence is the way we stay true to the story’s spirit.

On the other hand, our mission is to build an Inclusive, Engaging, and Ever-expanding Sci-fi Universe. To make an IP “Ever-expanding”, we believe we have to let others own it so it can live even when we’re not here.

We focus on three things in this IP’s co-creation, “Co-create, Co-govern, and Co-own”. While the first two you maybe able to achieve in Web2, the Co-ownership can be better implemented with Web3 technology.

Jake: The story and vision completely embody the whole Web3 ethos, so definitely seems fitting that you have decided to go down this route for it to have a life of its own! Really collaborative stuff.

Jake: I personally also really like the art you guys have attached to the different NFTs – how did you go about designing these? Where did you pull the inspiration from? I hear you’re an artist too – did you design them?

Handuo: Haha, great to hear that!

My background is in film and media art. But 3D stuff isn’t my specialty XD

I gave the original concept for the NFTs to be “growable” from a Seed to a Sapling, then to a Tree.

Because in the original short story, people found the “universal language” through planting trees on a virtual planet for 10 years.

One of our designers Marco designed the shape of the NFTs. Then our 3D artist Nico made them into the badges they are now.

Nico used Houdini and Cinema 4D to simulate wind in nature to turbulent particles and recorded the paths they took.

Jake: Very cool! Quite aesthetically pleasing how you guys decided to turn them into GIFs, the movement gives off the feeling of something living for sure.

Handuo: The seemingly chaotic intertwined threads form a shape that makes sense. It’s also how we imagine a collective intelligence will be creative.

Handuo: My pleasure!

Jake: Building a brand around a new piece of IP from the ground up is really exciting, how do you plan on tying in the animated series?

Handuo: Great question. While many forms of work can be derived from a universe, we plan to have the animated series be the one work that brings the whole IP to the public. The animated series bible is written and so is the pilot episode script. We plan to fund the pilot episode production and connect with networks (i.e. Netflix) to produce the animated series. In a way, it is to be a high-quality series with an engaging story and high-standard art. We’re to do this with an animation studio.

On the other hand, it has promotional value to our universe IP and so it is to our native token. Think about characters spending $BABEL between each other on Netflix XD

And most importantly, all the artworks created during the series production (i.e. concept arts, sketches, music) can all be listed for internal auctions within the community. It does not only support the production, but give the community members access of valuable artworks that may go up in value once the series is released.

Jake: That’s really creative – also a great way to help scale the awareness of the IP by having a high quality piece of content to drive people back towards the stories Babel is developing collectively.

Handuo: Yeah, that’s the idea!

Jake: I know how much work goes into developing the animated series bible + pilot episode script etc as we went through that process recently with Mogies, so kudos to you guys!

Can you explain how you guys are forming a creator economy via a DAO where people can help have a say in the story / future development? Perhaps touching on the guilds people can be apart of too

Handuo: Sure thing.

These are the Guilds. They each work autonomously led by a Guild committee.

The Guild Committee representatives from the DAO committee and are in charge of allocating funds and grants to Guilds according to their proposals.

The Guild committee is elected by the Guild members, as the Guild representatives are chosen by the Guild committees. In a way, we are a DAO with 8 small DAOs in it. Here is a diagram that explains it all;

Jake: The visuals really help absorb the structure of it, thanks!

Cool how you’ve created the 8 guilds as there are so many different types of creative people, so I’m sure someone will at least fall into one of these buckets.

Handuo: So far, yeah. We received around 4.5k members on our Discord last week. We’re working on channeling them into Guilds. This week guild members are creating symbols for their guilds to be made into NFTs by the end of the week.

Jake: Nice work – that’s awesome! I know you’ve been developing this for a while now – like any new venture, nothing is usually a smooth road – what would you say have been some of your biggest learning experiences launching this as a new Web3 project?

Handuo: I guess…Web3 doesn’t wait until you’re ready…you just go and learn on the road.

Jake: That’s for sure … best way to learn is by doing

Handuo: Like we haven’t had a chance to celebrate since we only launched recently. It’s just all of a sudden you are in this trend that pushes you forward.

Jake: Absolutely – well said

Are you able to explain some of the main upcoming milestones in the short to medium term that people in the Babel Universe can look forward to as community members?

Handuo: Other than these, each guild is doing different things. Like the writing guild may begin expanding the story and create a Babel Universe Fandom page.

The visual art guild will be creating images for the story, while the PR guild are seeking for more channels to promote the project at the moment.

Jake: Got it – that makes sense. Cool how the different guilds are helping shine a light on what is going on within Babel. Babel Universe to launch on Mogul Productions and power an Animated Series

Background

Babel began as an academic thesis about a hypothetical “universal language”, a language that is powerful enough to overcome all communication barriers between individuals. If you’re familiar with the biblical story “Tower of Babel”, you probably know that the people there spoke a unified language until God confused their tones. That language led its speakers to build a tower to reach heaven. In another sense, it showcases a positive belief in the collective power of mankind when connected.

After researching throughout history, (Handuo, Co-Founder of Babel) found that the search for the “universal language” has taken many shapes over the past thousands of years. From religion to linguistics, from philosophy to computer science, the most recent attempt to realize such a language is the BCI (Brain-Computer Interfaces) technology.

Such a techno-universal language may become true in the unavoidable near future. (Not only because Elon Musk’s company Neuralink aims to make it.) Especially when it brings more productivity to the ones who “speak” it than the ones who don’t. However, just like the “Tower of Babel” story implies, we can be constructive when we’re connected, but destructive when such a connection fails. We’re not only facing a technological problem but a humanistic choice. Because technology is who uses it. Just as a language is who speaks it.

In mid-2020, Handuo wrote these ideas into a Sci-fi short story and presented it at the Cologne film festival. Three writers (Marina, Michael, and Hernando) saw his presentation and found him after. In the following half a year, they expanded the short story into an animated series bible.

The Animated Series

“After a VR game that offered them purpose and a sense of community ends in 2035, 10,000 individuals reunite through an overwhelmingly powerful mindsharing software given to them by the game makers, only to find themselves on the run from the authorities…”

Together with Marina Bendocchi Alves, Michael Grießler, and Hernando Sandoval, they wrote an Animated-Series Bible in early 2021 that contains 10 x 10-15mins episodes for the first season.

We follow three main characters’ journeys from finding “Heaven” (the software that enables the universal language) in an online game to forming a collective intelligence and confronting an AI totalitarian world.

On one hand, the story is a speculative future of our world. On the other hand, it also centers on a universal topic: Connection vs Disconnection. The universal language speakers can share their thoughts, experiences, emotions, and skills, but also their flaws. Will they be able to shine a light on the dark cyberpunk future? We invite everyone who participates in the project to decide.

BabelDAO

Babel believes that a story about a collective intelligence is best to be made by a collective intelligence. And the best people and tools for this large-scale co-creation are only to be found in Web3. Therefore, Handuo partnered up with blockchain veteran Yanko at the beginning of 2022 to establish BabelDAO: a decentralized autonomous organization to bring the animated series to life and expand the Babel universe in ways that we alone cannot imagine.

The BabelDAO members will hold NFT badges that represent their levels of involvement in the universe’s creation. Their NFTs can be earned without spending money. Members can upgrade their badges by completing educational tasks, participating in community events, and creating values (Creative, Financing, Marketing, and Management) for the project in their own ways. On the other hand, they can open a purchasable option for members to speed up their growth. This is to bring cash flow for the project.

Every part of the series production is to be co-created. Members with high-level badges (which usually means a deeper understanding of the project) can do things such as writing their own storylines, voting on creative decisions, auditioning for voice-acting, and getting paid for their work.

The BabelDAO funds their creatives with both USD and their native ERC-20 token. All members involved in the series production are also to be compensated a royalty when the series goes public (i.e. streams on one of the major streaming platforms).

There are eight guilds in the DAO. They are: Writing Guild, Visual Art Guild, Audio Art Guild, Creative Coding Guild, Moving-Image Guild, Design Guild, Finance Guild, and Public Relations Guild. A universe can only expand with the collective effort of people with different skills and passions.

Q: Who is the artist?
A: Erick Tran is the Mogies artist. He was the lead artist for the Simpsons and King of the Hill and is working with us to make Mogies into an animated series
Q: How will the reveal go?
A: the reveal will happen after the sale. Each Mogie is randomly assigned to the owners in a fair manner. The Mogie number will not match the token ID
Q: I didn’t make the whitelist. Can I still purchase a Mogie?

Would you like to introduce yourself to anyone who is unaware of who you are and what you’re doing?

My name is Lazarus Guidry I am an actor-writer comic book writer of the comic book @ReignofteUnderdog I started out in the industry of a while ago I had done a few short films prior to getting out of the role in Straight Outta Compton and then from there I booked another TV series and other different TV shows including them unsolved stories of 2Pac and biggie smalls I’ve been in the industry as an artist the musician rapper a first score of the music soundtrack on the alpha dog movie and the song is called enemy and I m. It started to open up more doors in my entertainment journey that has been very interesting it has been a wild ride at this point and now I’m here launching an NFT with MOGUL productions and I’m excited to share with the world

Oh, that’s an awesome story. And I am a huge fan of Straight Outta Compton. The sound of a generation for some for sure.

The film was, dare I say, a masterpiece!

Lazarus Guidry:

Yes, the experience changed my life

It actually leads me nicely into the first question that I had prepared,

What was your experience like with your breakout role in the film world on “Straight Outta Compton”? Must have been eye opening to be involved in such a powerful film!

Lazarus Guidry:

Yes, it was very eye-opening

Lazarus Guidry:

My experience was not just eye-opening it was life-changing I got a chance to experience working with a well-known Director F Gary Gray and to watch everyone on sat perform and do the very best and really just give stellar performances oh yeah I realized that I was in the company of really great actors and their production was just phenomenal I had never seen a set built in a matter of hrs. Everyone from the Stunt team down to the crafty were on their A game it was a very high intense set and everyone was very serious about the job it made me step my game up as an actor and not only want to be an actor and a writer but enjoyed embellish as a creator of the story and they were telling it just really changed my life

Josh:

That’s incredible. And so good that you were able to appreciate the talents of all the people around you in all aspects of filmmaking 😊

Lazarus Guidry:

I did, it reminded Well I’m an actor a writer and most of all the comic book writer I love comic books

Josh:

So, getting to the writing aspect of your career – What spurred the initial development of the graphic novel? Are you able to go into the story of why you created this and how your life experiences help shape the storyline?

Lazarus Guidry:

Yes I started to create Reign of the Underdog as a niche for a record I was about to release during as an independent artist rapper and as I started to create the character I started to realize that I not only wanted to create the music but also a full story and so that niche turned from an Ashkan to a full series of comic books and from there it evolved into the Launching the first issue at San Diego Comic-Con and New York Con.

Lazarus Guidry:

I didn’t know that character development was going to be so involved and require a lot of thought it wasn’t like writing a song I had to really go in deep and define all the characters and solidify who they were and make sure that they were very solid. down to creating their shoes to the way the eyes were shaped to color of their hair it was very detailed and who they were had to be very detailed and still allowing you to love the character and even the villain and still dislike them but still find that balance and so I was really fortunate to be able to collaborate with Arvell Jones. we got down to the nitty-gritty and sorry creating the comic book

Josh:

That’s awesome and the details you went to! I know comic book fans are probably the most invested in the characters that they love, can you tell us a bit about your experience at Comic Con when you first brought this to market before Covid and how well it was received by fans?

Lazarus Guidry:

Yes I had initially created a Ashkan the first Con experience was in 2010 when we first released the reign of the underdog Ashkan those sold out completely just got devoured by the fans, they Loved them and so that propelled me to keep pushing forward with the story and working towards the next cons and so I was really excited about it we did a huge 50th anniversary release at San Diego ComiCon and added an addition to the comic book was an augmented reality demo of the characters so I wanted to constantly take the project to the vision of the animated series which is what ultimately I wanted to share with the world and the fans about what was coming next reign of the underdog in 2019 released a few hundred copies you and that 50 edition was sold out and the crowd response to it was phenomenal I just knew we were going to the next level. As the Creator of Reign of the Underdog it got me excited. Also, Covid and other things slowed us down but we’re right back at it again and so now we are releasing the NFTs and more things to come

Josh:

Wow you’ve been doing these for over a decade already. That’s fantastic.

It is quite incredible that you have been working with the likes of DC & Marvel artists to help bring this to life, what was it like working with OGs of the industry and see this come to fruition?

Lazarus Guidry:

Yes, it’s not as easy to create a character and storylines overnight

Lazarus Guidry:

Definitely working with Arvell Jones Bob Wiacek Tom Orsekowski these guys are well known and famous as illustrator inker and letterer in the industry made it a lot easier to bring the story to life, I was very honoured because I was in the company collaborating with these great artist I mean they were creating comic books before I could even think about a comic book

That’s great to be able to work with such talent

So, onto the NFT’s then, which is one of the main reasons you’re here 🙂

Josh:

Do you have a favourite image of the 3 NFT tiers that are minted? I guess must be hard to beat the original cover from the comic book!

Lazarus Guidry:

Wow that’s a very difficult question to answer all of the NFTs are my favourite but if I had to pick one if you come down to life and death, I’m gonna have to go with the cover

For sure. I would have to agree. but I guess that’s why its Tier 1!

Diving into NFT utility and perks for the fans and what they can look forward to. What aspect of the NFT utility are you most excited about? The shoe collection you are developing to accompany the NFTs sounds quite interesting!

Lazarus Guidry:

Yes you’re quite correct in that I would say I am most excited about the shoe even though you gave it away which is OK I am excited about it. The design that I come up I think the fans and crowd will be really happy with the development of the characters wardrobe

Mogul Productions is working with NFT-powered land conservation group Chain Fangs on a first-of-its-kind effort to leverage blockchain technology in order to make the City of Angels a more hospitable place for the thousands of plant and animal species that call it home. Chain Fangs is a philanthropic organization, which is using NFTs as a medium to buy back land with endangered animals under threat in Hollywood.

The Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles is one of the most famous and recognizable landscapes in the U.S. It is the location of countless sprawling celebrity mansions and the iconic Hollywood sign. But it’s not just a playground for the rich and famous, it’s also one of the most diverse wildlife areas in the country. Parts of the land in the area to be sold for commercial development have ecological consequences.

Chain Fangs has created and will be selling NFTs to fund its purchasing of undeveloped land in the Hollywood Hills from private owners. Each individual NFT is a piece of a striking wildlife image provided by partners at the Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife (CLAW). Once the land is purchased, Chain Fangs will place it under protection with an easement to the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy. These and other key partnerships with environmental protection groups in Los Angeles will help preserve the parcels of land and protect the wildlife within it.

The project serves as an opportunity to showcase how NFTs can be harnessed by a group of like-minded individuals to generate positive change in the world. The nature of the technology allows individuals to play a real part in aiding a cause they’re passionate about and facilitate grassroots efforts on an unprecedented scale. NFT holders will have a voice in determining any improvements that will be made to the preserved land parcels, including the placement of things like hummingbird feeders or strategically positioned benches with dedication plaques.

According to UCLA research, L.A. is home to over 4,000 distinct species of animals and plants, including 52 endangered species, all of which live between and among the vast urban center’s millions of human inhabitants. Chain Fangs is selling NFTs to help preserve these precious natural resources and show how the crypto community can take critical conservation efforts into their own hands.

The U.S. has some of the most robust and dedicated conservation organizations on the planet, but red tape, regulations, and bureaucratic processes often get in the way of their efforts. By using blockchain technology and tapping into the enthusiastic crypto community, Chain Fangs believes it can fast track conservation efforts like never before.

We’ve already seen that great things can happen when crypto enthusiasts come together for a common cause, whether it’s getting films funded, or helping protect the rainforest, crypto users can make it happen.

Mogul Productions, the decentralized film financing (DeFiFi), NFT marketplace and production company, is leveraging its community of film fans and blockchain marketplace to help fund the adaptation of a six-part adult graphic novel into an animated series.

The series, dubbed Reign of the Underdog Featuring Lazarus, is an original graphic novel by Lazarus Guidry featuring words and art by some of the industry’s brightest stars. The series’ arc tells the story of Lazarus, a man who must battle his way through a dark world of crime and corruption in search of answers about his family and his very existence. It’s a brooding tale with danger and deception lurking around every turn, with blood to be spilled along the way.

Lazarus Guidry (né Rawlin Guidry) is the creator and writer of the Reign of the Underdog series, and the inspiration for its titular character. A rapper, producer, and actor, he is known for roles in Straight outta Compton, Unsolved, Hulu’s Runaways and many other roles. He is the brainchild behind Reign of the Underdog featuring Lazarus. Guidry drew on experiences from his own troubled youth in Louisiana in the creation of the graphic novel’s world.

Comic industry veteran Arvell M. Jones is the penciller for the Reign of the Underdog series. His impressive artist resume dates back to Marvel Comics in the 1970s, drawing for titles including Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Luke Cage, the Avengers, Daredevil, and more.

Bob Wiacek, the inker for the project, is another comic veteran with decades of experience, beginning in the 1970s as a member of the “Crusty Bunkers” inking collective. He got his start inking backgrounds over Curt Swan’s pencils on Superman for DC Comics before starting a multi-decade career with Marvel, where he worked on titles including Star Wars, The Uncanny X-Men, Power Pack, Sensational She-Hulk, and many others.

Tom Orzechowski, responsible for letters and copyediting of the project, is an award-winning comic book letterer, primarily known for his work on Uncanny X-Men. Over his career, he has lettered around 6,000 pages of longtime X-Men writer Chris Claremont’s scripts over a 25-year period.

Once released, each new 24-page full-color issue of Reign of the Underdog Featuring Lazarus will be distributed to NFT holders, including a music compilation with the first issue. The 500 piece NFT collection will be used to help finance the upcoming animated series and give fans the opportunity to be part of the journey from script to screen. NFT holders will receive a long list of perks & utility in addition to receiving all 5 issues of the comics!

The six-part mini-series will appeal to a broad spectrum of adult comic fans, featuring a richly detailed imagining of a dystopic 2033 cloaked in futuristic sci-fi imagery.

With the launch of the coming animated series, the owners of these Hollywood-inspired NFT characters will have the IP rights to their Mogie characters forever. All of which come with valuable benefits.

The Mogies collection of NFTs support the creation of the new animated series. To ensure that the Mogieland and Mogies ecosystem is healthy and continually adding more utility, 50% of all 7.5% secondary market royalties will go directly towards growing the project. Also 10% of all future rewards from the Mogies animated series, wearables, collectibles, or line of figurines will be distributed to Mogie NFT holders as rewards quarterly.

Mogie NFT owners will get the ability to participate in the animation series development. In the private Discord channel, Mogie owners can be part of the animated filmmaking process in partnership with the animators of the Simpsons. They can make suggestions about the series and have direct input to the creators.

Once the Mogies animated series airs, the studio version of the Pilot will be transformed into an exclusive NFT and be sent out to all Mogie holders. As part of the Mogies derivative collection, users will own a piece of a TV series. In addition a special thank you will be shown in the credits at the end of episodes to select holders.

Mogies that are bought at the specific price cutoffs will have that Mogie embossed in gold and silver respectively. Users will be sent these exclusive pieces of art as NFTs.

Phase 1: Public Sale Dutch Auction

Mogies will be sold in a Dutch Auction process, which means that Mogies will start at 1 ETH and the price will slowly decrease at a rate of 0.2 ETH every 24 hours

Phase 2: Whitelist Sale for Access Pass holders (NFTs reserved for them)

The 1,073 Mogies will be available to those on the whitelist and will be sold at the last price of the Dutch Auction.

Phase 3: Public Sale

Any remaining Mogies will be available for 72 hours and will be sold at the last price of the Dutch Auction.

Benefits of STARS Tokens

Welcome everyone to Mogul’s ecosystem. We are the NFT marketplace platform for the movie industry. Over the years Mogul has cultivated its team and technology to give you the best experience. Each day Mogul develops exciting products infused with a strong community spirit.

With so many exciting products from film and entertainment entering Mogul’s marketplace, new fans and collectors are joining our ecosystem daily. Mogul creates processes to interact with and reward its community. This also includes working with its cross-community partners to provide utility in the form of games, tokens and other rewards.

The STARS token is our native cryptocurrency that opens the world of Film3 wide open. It’s used for staking, voting, governance and ownership. STARS allows users to take part in our NFT drops, watch movies and fashion shows in our Mogieland metaverse, and get involved in the community. Fans and collectors who wish to buy NFTs on the Mogul platform, or participate in the P2E games and land sales in Mogieland, will need STARS to do so.

Buying NFTs with STARS rewards buyers with discounts and lower gas rates. Occasionally, drops and other sales can be purchased with both STARS and ETH. In such cases, products bought with STARS will receive a significant discount on their purchase as compared to using ETH. This is our way of saying thank you for supporting the utility and benefits of our native cryptocurrency.

Aside from staking STARS in film projects, which we will get to shortly, Mogul Productions runs its own staking programs. Staking means locking your tokens in a staking pool to earn rewards in the form of more STARS tokens. Participants have the opportunity to lock their tokens for specified periods of time to receive a STARS reward rate defined by the pool they are entering. The longer the lockup, the more rewards!

Mogul Productions is a decentralized film financing (DeFiFi) and NFT platform that connects creators, movie fans, and film financiers in one space to ensure the best films get made by giving everyone a voice.

By leveraging blockchain technology and a tokenized system, Mogul incentivizes participation and rewards engagement. Through the use of STARS tokens, users can vote on, greenlight and participate in key decision-making aspects of production.

Quadratic voting promotes active participation in voting from all of the STARS token holders, regardless of their size, because each holder has a voice in the process. Small holders have a proportionally large voice; which in turn allows Mogul to gauge the sentiment across our entire community, and not just a few large holders!

That’s the premise of Mogul. Bringing power back to the crowd

Mogul’s production team and advisors are award-winning Hollywood veterans who have written, directed, acted in, and produced a wide range of films and TV shows. Our team reviews film submissions.

Mogul then comes up with a shortlist of films to vote on based on the producer’s recommendations and expertise. We’d present those films to the community. Then the community votes on what film they want to see turned into a cinematic release.

NFTs campaigns are then custom-built for each movie.

Mogul is constantly building ways to add more utility to the STARS. This includes but is not limited to usage in new film and crypto projects, mores ways to spend the token on other platforms, and getting the token listed on other exchanges.

Supernovas reward STARS token holders

Mogul is always thinking of ways to give more utility to STARS. Each time STARS are used for in-app activities, Mogul destroys a portion of the STARS used to complete the action.

That includes:

Purchasing limited-edition NFTs that are only made available to STARS holders
Purchasing rewards with STARS
Submitting scripts for Mogul’s review

Here at Mogul, we call it a Supernova when a portion of STARS are permanently taken out of circulation, or burned. Supernovas allow users to buy more NFTs with their STARS, as well as protect and reward our community of token holders. Supernovas are scheduled to occur on the third Friday of every month and more may be added as circumstances allow.
